Foundation Learning

Our Foundation Learning provision offers students the chance to follow different pathways to best suit their current needs and future aspirations. This course is taken alongside core GCSE subjects but offers the potential for an additional GCSE.

Key Stage 4

Students work on developing employability skills which will prepare them for life after WHS; areas covered include CV/ letter writing and interview techniques.

Depending on the pathway followed, students may, or may not have an exam during this course.

Vocational Pathway

Key Stage 4 This pathway is aimed at those students who benefit from a more hands-on learning experience and/ or who are working at level 4 or below at the end of Key Stage 3. The delivery of this curriculum involves at least three days on the Westhoughton High School site where they study core subjects English, Maths, Science, ICT, Personal Development and PE and then one day with an external provider.

In addition to core GCSE subjects, students complete NVQ or BTEC Level 1 qualifications. They have the opportunity to study off-site, choosing from one of the following courses:

• Construction (Bolton Community College)

• Hairdressing and Beauty Therapies (Training for Today)

• Health and Social Care (Training for Today)
