School Catering

In the summer of 2013 we appointed a new catering provider in close consultation with parents, governors and students.

Mellors Catering Services was chosen for their commitment to healthy eating, support of local suppliers and their willingness to work with and respond positively to students.

The range of food available on a daily basis in school is varied and menus change regularly. Special dietary requirements can be catered for and the vast majority of dishes are baked or steamed.

A dish of the day with vegetable accompaniments is offered along with soup, a vegetarian option and a range of salads, jacket potatoes and freshly made sandwiches. For pudding there’s always fruit, yogurts and homemade tray bakes to choose from.

Mellors regularly arrange special theme days which honour cuisines from around the world or tie in with key events or dates eg Burns Night, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Christmas and American Independence Day. These events are very popular with our students.

Menus are posted in the dining room and around the school; you can also view them via the PDF documents below.

Dining Facilities

Our students can choose to eat in two canteens, Miners’ Diner which sells hot and cold food or the recently refurbished Clare's Cafe which offers sandwiches and snacks, you can see some photos of these facilities via our Flickr pages here.

Cashless Catering

Westhoughton High School operates a cashless catering system which provides lots of advantages for the school, students and parents:

  • Quicker service and shorter queues at lunch and break times
  • No more looking for change every morning, accounts can be quickly credited online via the ParentPay system
  • Discourages dinner money being spent in shops outside school for unhealthy snacks such as chocolate and crisps
  • Automatic ‘Free School Meals’ allocation with students remaining anonymous
  • Parents can receive reports of the use of the system.
