Health and Social Care BTEC

Health and Social Care education is a valuable tool in equipping young people with the skills and knowledge they need to become responsible, empathetic and compassionate members of a wider, diverse and inclusive community. It has a strong role to play in our school, with much of our wider intergenerational work in the community being led from within the department and many of our students supporting this highly valued work.

It also gives learners the opportunity to explore a highly valued sector that accounts for 1 in 10 jobs in the UK. The BTEC Tech Award suite is an introduction to vocational learning. The qualifications give learners the opportunity to build skills that show an aptitude for further learning and many of our students go on to study this beyond WHS and pursue a career in the sector. We love nothing more than having past students back to speak to our classes.

At the heart of health and social care is the fascinating ‘journey of life’ the study of which aligns the subject closely with our own LEARN values as a school:

· Learners will explore human life span development across 6 life-stages and the many life events and factors that can affect health and wellbeing along the way.

· They will be introduced to the many health care and social care services that play a key role in ‘looking after’ our loved ones and ensuring that they can ‘enjoy life’

· The Health and Social Care Curriculum has been carefully designed so that every student can ‘aim high’ by ensuring that it meets the rigorous requirements of the exam board whilst enriching it with opportunities, experiences and encounters

· They will learn about the skills, attributes and values common to any career in this sector, rooted in ‘respect for each other’ irrespective of situation or circumstance.

· For many of our students, regardless of starting point, a BTEC in health and social care is just the beginning of a lifelong commitment to ‘never stop learning’ as they pursue a post 16 pathway into a health or social care career, where ‘Continued Professional Development’ is essential in improving the overall quality of care.
